GSA Global Supply offers multiple forward supply points to support OCONUS customers. These operations stock and deliver hundreds of high-demand products for customers in Europe and across the Pacific. During 2023, additional sites will open to support customers in Alaska, Puerto Rico and ten countries in the Middle East. Products are typically delivered in less than a week, compared to the weeks (or longer) it may take for delivery from the continental U.S.


The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and Wayne State University's Mike Ilitch School of Business are collaborating on an innovative new initiative to develop talent in global automotive purchasing and supply chain management. Called the Global Automotive Purchasing & Supply Chain Network (pdf) (GAPSCN or "Gap-Scan"), the program helps provide community college, undergraduate, graduate and adult continuing education curricula with real-world lecture material, automotive case studies, best practices, knowledge assessments and standards.


"It is imperative that we accelerate the development of our next generation of global purchasing and supply chain professionals by providing them with a skill set and lexicon honed to manage the industry's increasingly complex business challenges," said J. Scot Sharland, executive director of AIAG, an organization providing industry-developed standards, allied tools, emerging best practices, and training in quality, supply chain and corporate responsibility.


"We have witnessed a strategic transformation of the automotive supply chain over the past 25 years," said Associate Professor John C. Taylor, chair of the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management at the Ilitch School. "The rate of innovation in vehicle design, advanced manufacturing and engineered materials has been truly remarkable and necessitated the creation of an unprecedented collaboration between industry and academia. We are fast-tracking future purchasing and supply chain leaders into industry assignments, saving time and expense often required to retrain entry-level professionals, and positively impacting employee retention rates."


AIAG will provide the program with guidelines, training and educational opportunities in areas such as global materials management, customs and supply chain security, export compliance, packaging, quality management, finished vehicle logistics, corporate responsibility and environmental compliance. WSU will give participants access to undergraduate and graduate courses and programs, executive education, thought leadership, basic and applied research, and internships as well as international studies programs currently offered in China, Italy, Brazil and Poland. Degree programs are available, including undergraduate majors and MBA concentrations in purchasing and supply chain management.


WSU and AIAG are also offering two supply chain management non-degree courses: (1) an annual certificate program providing an in-depth understanding of global supply chain topics and issues and (2) a one-week, automotive-focused Global Purchasing and Supply Chain Management Seminar that prepares purchasing and supply chain executives, senior managers and other professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to significantly improve company purchasing and supply chain management contributions to cost and overall performance.


The supply chain is the network of manufacturers, suppliers, logistics providers, and others who work together to get your product into the hands of a client. Not only do raw material providers, transportation businesses, and wholesale warehouses make up the supply chain, but so do jobs and services that help move the product. These responsibilities include quality assurance, marketing, procurement, and sourcing.


Supply chain management is about optimizing your supply chain so it runs as smoothly as possible, eliminating friction, and ensuring the entire process of producing goods or services, all the way to delivering them to the end-users functions seamlessly.


While procurement has an input focus, supply chain management is more output-oriented and deals with what it takes to get your products and services into the hands of your customers as efficiently as possible.


While procurement only emphasizes building supplier relationships and managing them to ensure they can be leveraged to deliver the supplies your organization needs to function, supply chain management includes all that into its big bracket.


Procurement has been a vital, transactional part of conducting business for almost as long as commerce has existed. Although the days of scribes tracking purchases on papyrus scrolls are long past, the process of carefully selecting and purchasing the goods and services needed for day-to-day business operations remains as important as ever. By enabling the company to reliably get the supplies it needs at the lowest cost, procurement can directly impact the bottom line.


Traditionally, some businesses have used the term procurement synonymously with purchasing. But now, purchasing is often seen as just one stage in a larger, more strategic procurement process. So, what exactly is procurement?


Procurement involves every activity involved in obtaining the goods and services a company needs to support its daily operations, including sourcing, negotiating terms, purchasing items, receiving and inspecting goods as necessary and keeping records of all the steps in the process.


2. Submit purchase request. When an employee or business group needs to procure a significant quantity of new supplies or services, they make a formal purchase request (also known as a purchase requisition). A purchase request notifies the company that a need exists, usually via department managers, purchasing staff or the financial team, as well as specifications such as price, time frame needed, quantity and other important things for the purchasing team to keep in mind. The department overseeing the purchase can then approve or deny the purchase request. If approved, the procurement team can proceed with selecting a vendor and making the purchase.


Organizations commonly think of steps in the procurement process as a life cycle. This perspective provides a reminder that all the tasks and stages in the procurement process overlap and rely on each other and that the process is continuous. A carefully thought-out procurement life cycle also recognizes the integration between the process and the business as a whole, including the need to align with existing company rules and procedures covering areas such as budgeting. The process is not always linear, and sometimes adjustments need to be made to account for a dynamic digital supply chain with shifting suppliers, availabilities and costs.


Nowadays, supply chain risk management is becoming a top priority in procurement, as companies lose millions because of supply disruption, cost volatility, non-compliance fines and incidents that cause damage to both: the organizational brand and reputation. All the following factors can cost your organization tens of millions in sales and hundreds of millions in brand damage. While reputation may only be important for name brands, cost volatility and supply disruption affect all manufacturers.


Business experts define supply disruption as any unforeseen event that disturb the normal flow of goods and materials in a supply chain. Such disruptions can have major negative consequences for the management of operations. For example, they can result in production disruptions and hampered productivity and capacity utilization.


Understanding supply risks can enable purchasing organizations to take effective action in response to those risks. Risk management should form an integral part of good purchasing and supply practice. It is essential to address the right risks and use the right strategies.


Having several suppliers so you can secure enough raw materials and or products so you can remain fully stocked up is extremely important. There are numerous lessons to be derived by examining purchasing and supply chain management in 2020.
