What makes up your shadow depends on what you subconsciously reject within yourself. We usually hear this come up as negative self-talk. Often, these rejected parts of ourselves are the result of childhood experiences.

Working with your unconscious mind to uncover the parts of yourself that you repress and hide from yourself. This can include trauma or parts of your personality that you subconsciously consider undesirable.

In turn, this can help you feel more compassionate toward others. You no longer see the dark side of yourself reflected in others. Instead, you can see them as whole people who likely have their own inner battles to face.

Finally, you can spot your shadow by noticing yourself projecting. One way you can do this is by using the mirror technique. This technique can be uncomfortable at first. However, it can allow you to uncover who your shadow self really is.

The only way to live authentically as yourself is to discover and accept your shadow self. By accepting yourself fully, you can not only improve your own wellness and mental health, but you can also be ready to accept others for who they are, too.

We all have a shadow self. It is generally made up of the parts of ourselves we deem unacceptable. For many people this means things like our sadness, rage, laziness, and cruelty. But you might also see as uncivilised and unacceptable things like your personal power, your independence, or your emotional sensitivity.

It is only through our own effort to learn who we are and cultivate self-acceptance that we can recognise and embrace our shadow, and then benefit from the many gifts the shadow offers.

Of course looking at what you are constantly blaming others for tends to be a direct route to your shadow self. What are the things you like least in other people? Does that characteristic exist within you, too?

Is it possible for the shadow self to take over if you are not stable at the time for what ever reason : physical, mental, emotional, as a type of protection to self? When do we develop the shadow self?

I agree. I have been fooling myself for decades thinking I can suppress my shadow self. The result was horrible. I started suffering from low self esteem, palpitations, etc. It is only when I started accepting my shadow self with as much regard as my so called saintly self that I started making progress.

Hi HarleyReading this has been very insightful for me as I have just started some therapy with a person who works with the shadow self. I have been confused with the concept of the masculine & feminine side of myself in re to my issues but hearing your explanation has brought more clarity. Where can I go to access more of this kind of information from Harley Therapy.

We all have parts of ourselves that aren't necessarily our favorites, from doubts and fears to guilt and shame. These so-called bad aspects of ourselves make up the "shadow self," but the good news is, when you learn to embrace your shadow self, you can live a more balanced life. Here's how, according to experts.

For example, she says, consider someone who has a core belief that feeling resentment in motherhood correlates with being ungrateful or a bad mom. "Instead of embracing their shadow self [and] experiencing anger or frustration at times toward her child or a situation in her life impacting her as a mom, she ignores or denies or thinks she's less than because she's having the feeling or thought or experience," Nicogossian explains.

"With that kind of exploration, he believed that we could successfully incorporate and work through these repressed thoughts and feelings and experience greater internal peace rather than being unconsciously driven by shadow self needs and feelings (like we normally are)," he adds.

As Nicogossian explains, shadow work is fundamentally about bringing disowned parts of yourself and your experience to the light through awareness, curiosity, and intention. You do so when you "notice patterns and themes that keep showing up in your life," she says. The more you learn to witness your mind, the more you'll see how and when your shadow self influences you.

As you learn to witness and observe your mind and your shadow, Nicogossian says to do so without judgment or putting yourself down. "When you experience a shadow emotion, allow yourself to experience the shadow emotion without judging yourself or the feeling," she adds.

"Be sure to find a counselor who is nonjudgmental, supportive, caring, and with whom you feel safe to explore the shadow side of yourself, which is, in essence, embracing vulnerability with self-compassion," Nicogossian adds.

Caraballo says some nontraditional therapies can also have a place in shadow work, such as past-life regression therapy. After all, if you believe in past lives or karma, who's to say aspects of previous lives aren't still affecting your shadow self today?

For example, if you're feeling sad, she says, "Go a little deeper and ask yourself: What kind of sadness am I feeling? Perhaps lonely, depleted or exhausted, or hopeless? The more descriptive and specific in labeling emotions, the more awareness is created, which helps identify what you need to do to take care of your emotional health."

Ask yourself if you often criticize yourself for the same behavior, or if this person reminds you of someone who has wronged you. "The answers to those questions might provide space for deeper reflection and facilitate a connection to the shadow self," Caraballo adds.

We all have a shadow, and while learning to integrate and embrace it might not be easy, it's so worth it. As Nicogossian says, accepting the shadow self creates space to understand and process our experiences, which allows for both positive change and healing.

A prospering shadow economy makes official statistics (on unemployment, official labor force, income, consumption) unreliable. Policies and programs that are framed on the basis of unreliable statistics may be inappropriate and self-defeating.

Also called the underground, informal, or parallel economy, the shadow economy includes not only illegal activities but also unreported income from the production of legal goods and services, either from monetary or barter transactions. Hence, the shadow economy comprises all economic activities that would generally be taxable were they reported to the tax authorities. See Table 1.Table 1. Vancouver, B.C., The Frazer Institute, 1997.A precise definition of the shadow economy, however, is quite difficult because the shadow economy develops all the time, adjusting to changes in taxation and regulations.

Yet from my own experience, this is a form of spiritual bypassing: using spirituality to avoid everything uncomfortable within us instead of facing it with honesty and courage. Furthermore, actually turning toward your Shadow Self helps you to embrace these disconnected parts of yourself, creating more psychological and spiritual balance (wholeness). Denying your darkness only creates chaos and disharmony.

The right-handed path seeks to improve the personal self, overcome its flaws, but the left-handed seeks investigation, seeks to face the shadows in its pursuit of self-care. Just as is represented in the ancient symbol of the Yin and Yang, when you balance both opposites, the dichotomy of right and left will disappear.

Personally, I like to think that first there was darkness. Unlike light, darkness is infinite. Under every rock, you will find darkness, but light and darkness need each other to come into existence. Unless you learn to first embrace that darkness within yourself, you can never pursue the light of self-love in a balanced way.

So use the world as your mirror. Write down what you observe about yourself. Be open-minded and receptive. Show kindness toward yourself. Soon you will be on your way to reclaiming all parts of yourself and move closer and closer toward Wholeness.

Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 1998. ISBN cloth, 0-472-10920-0; paper, 0-472-08518-2; xv + 292 pages, photographs, notes, glossary, references, index. Cloth, US$57.50; paper, US$22.95. Jeannette Mageo has written a book filled with ideas about Samoan culture, constructs of self, socialization, and historical changes. She had the rare perspective of being an insider-outsider by virtue of her marriage to a Samoan and her employment as a college teacher in Samoa. This volume appears to be three different books. The first postulates cultural elements of a Samoan self, the second a construction of elements of childhood socialization, and the third a historical reconstruction of the influences of foreign missionaries and US military on the "reconfiguring" of Samoan ideas or "discourses" of male and primarily female selves and sexuality.
